The collections of the Prince von und zu Liechtenstein contain the most important collection of old masters in private hands anywhere in the world. To mark the centenary of the foundation of the LGT, the private bank of the Princely House of Liechtenstein, a temporary exhibition entitled ENCOUNTERS is being held at the Liechtenstein Garden Palace in Vienna. Viewable as part of a guided tour, it will present selected works from the Princely Collections grouped in entirely fresh contexts and relationships. In addition, the specially developed Artifact app supplies expanded digital content relating to the objects featured in the exhibition, making the fascinating stories behind the works vivid and immediate.
Displayed in the permanent galleries and the three rooms of the former Ladies’ Apartments at the Liechtenstein Garden Palace, the ENCOUNTERS temporary exhibition breaks loose from the individual artworks’ time of origin, offering an overview of artistic approaches to various topics such as mythology, landscape and portraiture over the ages. The masterpieces on view include “The Gifts of the Sea” by Jacques Jordaens and Frans Snyders, Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller’s “Portrait of Shipmaster Matthias Feldmüller in Red Tailcoat and White Trousers” and “River Landscape with Ferry” by Salomon van Ruysdael.

In addition, the Princely Collections and the LGT in collaboration with ETH Zurich have developed Artifact, an innovative augmented reality app that supplies a broader perspective on individual works in the Princely Collections. A new and unique approach to experiencing art, it enables visitors to immerse themselves in paintings from past centuries and discover these works by the old masters in a completely new light. The app reveals details that would often be difficult or impossible to make out when viewing the work ‘in the flesh’, and also supplies fascinating background information presented in an immediate and vivid way.
The app can be installed free of charge on any mobile IOS or Android device, enabling you to deepen your experience and knowledge of these works while on the go or at home.
