The Princely Collections first visited Japan in 2012/13 with an exquisite selection of masterpieces from all genres. In 2019/20 a travelling exhibition taking in Tokyo, Utsunomiya, Oita, Sendai and Hiroshima will focus on the tradition of European fine painting. In addition to paintings, the exhibition will bring together East Asian porcelain and porcelain from the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory, revealing to the visitor the way these two ‘worlds’ influenced each other from the beginning of the eighteenth century.
As one of the cultural hotspots of Tokyo, the Bunkamura Museum, which also contains a major concert hall, offers an ideal starting point. The exhibition is divided into seven sections (History of the Liechtenstein Family and Noble Life, Christian Religious Subjects, Mythological Subjects, Porcelain: Orient meets Occident, Porcelain: The Vienna Porcelain Manufactory, Landscape Painting, Flower Painting) and ranges from the early Renaissance to the Biedermeier and neoclassical eras.
