Junge Dame beim Frühstück

Eglon Hendrik van der Neer was born in Amsterdam, and was the son of the distinguished landscape painter Aert van der Neer, who appears to have taught him, but his true master was the portrait and history painter Jacob van Loo. Van der Neer had a successful and unusually peripatetic career, which took him from Amsterdam to the principality of Orange in southern France, to Rotterdam, Brussels, and finally to Düsseldorf, where he became court painter to Johann Wilhelm, the Elector Palatine.
The present panel, which is signed and dated 1665 on the tabletop, is one of the most exquisitely finished of all his works. It has been shown that it is based upon a now lost prototype by Gerard ter Borch, known in the form of a copy, and indeed this is by no means the only occasion when Van der Neer was influenced by Ter Borch.
The artist has portrayed an elegantly dressed young woman, seemingly under a spotlight, clad in red, pink, and white, and sitting on a scarlet studded chair. Beyond her the room is plunged into almost stygian gloom, so that the only accoutrement that may be made out is an oriental carpet. She is proffering a plate of oysters, accompanied by a peeled lemon, to an unseen – but presumably male – companion. The treatment is far subtler than was often the case in such genre scenes, but the erotic connotations of oysters suggest that love is in the air. Be that as it may, Van der Neer’s immaculate technique guarantees that all the different materials and surfaces – the silks and satins of the woman’s costume, the ceramic jug and the crumbly bread roll on the table by her side – are palpably brought to life.
