Salomon Kleiner completed an apprenticeship with the Augsburg engraver Johann August Corvinus. He moved to Vienna in 1720 and made drawings for an extensive series of veduta prints. His precisely detailed views appealed to princely clients as they represented a way of displaying standing and rank. They also constitute an important record of building culture.
Salomon Kleiner’s engraving shows the south facade and the cour d’honneur of the Garden Palace as it looked during the Baroque era. The Sala Terrena was originally designed as a room open to the exterior through which one could walk unobstructed. It was not until 1900 that it was glazed. Today the centre of the Sala Terrena is occupied by the Golden Carriage of Prince Joseph Wenzel I von Liechtenstein built in 1738.
