Schiffe vor der Küste

In 1672, the year when the present canvas was painted, the Dutch marine specialist Willem van de Velde the Younger moved to London in the company of his father and namesake Willem the Elder (1611–1693). Given that they both painted the same kind of subjects in a very similar manner, it is far from straightforward to distinguish their hands, though it appears that only Willlem van de Velde the Elder produced large-scale grisaille drawings, and at least on occasion they very probably collaborated with one another on individual works. Willem the Younger was extremely prolific, producing hundreds of seascapes in his long career, and was the founding father of marine painting both in his native Holland and in his adopted homeland.
The principal vessel in the present work is shown flying Dutch flags, so it must presumably have been painted in Holland immediately before the move to England. It is a wholly typical example of the art of Willem van de Velde the Younger, in which the ships’ accuracy of detail is naturally one of their supreme merits but by no means the sole reason why his seascapes were so popular. In addition, the artist included a number of figures going about their business on a stretch of shore in the right foreground, and also a rowing boat moving off from the ship of state over to the left. Last but not least, the very considerable expanse of sky that fills so much of the canvas is beautifully observed, with shafts of sunlight gilding the fleecy pink clouds.
