Landscape with Bathers

Landschaft mit Badenden

Philips Wouwerman was by far the most eminent member of a dynasty of painters from Haarlem, where he was born and appears to have spent his entire professional career apart from a brief apprenticeship in the late 1630s in Hamburg, where he married. Back in Haarlem he became a member of the local Guild of St Luke in 1640. While it is true that his landscapes often look convincingly southern in character, there is no evidence to support the notion that he ever travelled to France or Italy. He was a tirelessly productive painter, above all of genre scenes and landscapes, but he also executed religious and mythological pictures on occasion.
Although Wouwerman seldom dated his paintings, the differing forms of his signature may be associated with particular periods in his career, and the ‘PHILS. W’ found here supports a dating after 1646, which is entirely consistent with the work’s style. The canvas is a characteristic example of his later production, in which small-scale figures are set in an expansive landscape. In the present instance, the emphasis is on an all-male bathing party in which the participants have thrown off their clothes, or are in the process of so doing; their unflattering nudity and sharing of the river with at least one of their dogs suggest spontaneous enjoyment of a sunny day, worlds removed from the classical ideal.
