Below knee-length tailcoat à la française (banded collar, cuffs, flap pockets), black silk velvet; silk embroidery (partly underlaid with card, satin stitch, partly interlocked, limited use of French knot stitch), bobbin lace border at edges; large buttons covered with embroidered fabric, no buttonholes, three hook-and-eye fastenings: pockets with three-pointed flaps extending over back panel, cuffs with 3 embroidered buttons, concealed slit at centre back with 5 extant decorative buttons; lined throughout with cream-coloured silk satin
