this site may contain automatically translated textMarcantonio Franceschini’s “Diana and Callisto” is one of the paintings by the master still kept in the Princely Collections; they once belonged to the original adornments of the Garden Palace in Rossau. Johann Adam Andreas I of Liechtenstein who commissioned the building desired two rooms of the piano nobile to be decorated with painting cycles based on Ovid’s “Metamorphoses”. This picture from the Diana cycle was placed above the fireplace in today’s Gallery 8. In his rendering of the classical physical ideal of the protagonists the artist was complying with the prince’s taste, who requested Franceschini of »piu di nudi« (absolute nudity).
