The splendid bird fêng-huang as the central motif of the tureen is one of China’s propitious legendary creatures and guardian of the imperial palace. Its plumage in the sacred colours symbolizes benevolence, justice, decorum, wisdom and faithfulness. Preserved in the Collections of the Esterházy Princes are parts of a service with the same decor in green and iron red, including both Chinese originals and perfect copies made by the Du Paquier porcelain manufactory.
