PETER PAUL RUBENS
ALLEGORY OF WAR
The pose of the half-naked woman who dominates the painting entitled Allegory of War derives from a classical marble relief. Rubens drew this relief, which is today preserved in the Capitoline Museums, in the gardens of Cardinal Cesi in Rome during his time in Italy. It probably depicts the captive Dacia, the personification of the province of Dacia which had been conquered by Emperor Trajan in 106 AD. Bowed over, her brow supported by her right hand, she seems to be contemplating the horrors of war. Taking the historical events of Rubens's age into account, this oil sketch depicting a female figure surrounded by the horrors of war could also be taken as a personification of the Netherlandish provinces which had been subjugated by Spain. This oil sketch was probably painted in connection with the commission Rubens received from Maria de' Medici in 1622.
