The Assumption of the Virgin Mary was a subject that Rubens returned to time and again throughout his artistic career. Two precisely executed modelli have been preserved of Rubens's last and most monumental treatment of this subject which is today held in the Princely Collections. One of these is in the Courtauld Institute Galleries in London while the other on the occasion of the exhibition RUBENS IN WIEN is on loan to the Liechtenstein Museum from the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven. Here the sketch-like use of colour reminiscent of the work of Titian can be seen even more clearly than in the finished work. Rubens's preferred medium for preliminary studies was the oil sketch on wood. In cases where the oil sketch – as here – displays the final composition of a picture elaborated in all its detail, it is referred to as a modello.
