PETER PAUL RUBENS
THE VIRGIN ADORNED WITH FLOWERS
Here Rubens depicts an intimate family scene the context of which remains unclear. St Anne is putting a wreath of flowers on her daughter's head while St Joseph turns away in an attitude of prayer. Rubens is possibly referring here to the Immaculate Conception. In general this painting is recognised as being an autograph work and as dating to after Rubens's return from Italy in 1608. What he had learnt in Italy is evident in the figure of the Virgin Mary, being clearly modelled on the classical statue of Providentia (Vatican Museums, Rome). Drawings by Rubens, some of which found their way into his own collection at Antwerp, reveal his extensive study of the art of antiquity during his years in Italy (1600–1608).
