ERASMUS QUELLINUS
THE MEETING OF KING SOLOMON AND THE QUEEN OF SHEBA
The Book of Kings relates how the Queen of Sheba travelled to the court of King Solomon to test his legendary wisdom. Quellinus clothes the protagonists in contemporary dress, rendering the biblical account in a wealth of colourful detail. Although there is no evidence that the artist ever travelled to Italy, the architecture in the background attests to a close familiarity with the buildings of Rome. By 1634 Quellinus was a pupil of Rubens, and he continued to work in the master's studio until the latter's death in 1640.
