FRIEDRICH VON AMERLING

Vienna 1803 - 1887 Vienna
Amerling was the most distinguished Austrian portraitist of the 19th century alongside Waldmüller. After attending the Vienna Academy, he developed his fundamental painting style during periods of study in London and Paris, where he was taught by Thomas Lawrence and Horace Vernet. In Vienna his reputation as a portrait artist grew rapidly. Notably, he carried out commissions for the imperial household and nobility prior to 1848.

Amerling’s highly-developed gift of observation was not confined to pure character studies, but also documented the subjects’ conception of themselves in their role as members of the nobility or bourgeoisie. Amerling’s portraits reflect society during the Austrian Vormärz period.

Amerling captured the family of Prince Alois II of Liechtenstein in a series of masterly portraits which are preserved together with further works by the artist in the Princely Collections.
