PETER PAUL RUBENS

Siegen 1577 - 1640 Antwerp
Peter Paul Rubens was the acknowledged head of the Flemish school of painting. Throughout his life he served the court of the Spanish viceroy in Brussels. During his stay in Italy in the first decade of the 17th century he was also court painter to the Gonzaga family in Mantua. Later he painted at the royal courts of London, Madrid and Paris.

The variety and excellence of his training gave him a wide scope of material sources for his paintings. Portrayals ranged from antique myths and contemporary history to biblical scenes which were greatly appreciated by the Flemish Catholic Church as support for their Counter-Reformation endeavours. His achievements in the field of portrait and landscape painting also had a profound influence on entire generations of artists. A large workshop enabled him to carry out extensive commissions and it was also a first-class training ground for budding artists.
